I can extract the accompaniment, or transpose the work into another key, or both, with a very few clicks of the mouse. I import it into Finale, and correct the reading errors. Skylark, I think any computer programme's value depends on what you want out of it.įor example, I spent about 40quid (can't remember exactly how much but around that) on Finale Printmusic. So at the moment, handwriting transpositions isn't an activity I want to do for its own sake, I just want to do it in order to get from A to B, preferably as quickly as possible! I used to do calligraphy which had the same effect, but calligraphy was one of the things I've chosen to give up in order to make more time for my music activities. Salrec - I know what you mean about it being soothing.

JohnS - I think you're right, that IS something I ought to learn how to do and I don't know why it didn't occur to me to do that I've tried sightreading up/down an octave and found that easier than I expected (only very easy pieces though!) but seeing as you've mentioned sight transposing vocal music, I think I'll give it go as it will certainly make life a lot easier in the long run. I'm wondering if there's another use that could be made of the program, so I'm going to post another question in a different thread and I'd appreciate your comments on my new question about arranging parts. It sounds like for the use I want to make of it, there's very little to be gained by using a computer program - a bit of time could be saved, but not so much as to make it worth the cost of the program.
